Is anyone using a solo 681 or solo 675 in tree service or as a logger or fallers world? How are they holding up and how are you getting your parts?
-
Just picked up Solo 665 NIB. Suggestions for new P&C kit? I have a NWP BBK for DolMak 6400 was going to put it on a NIB 6401.
Shep
-
Isnt that the little brother to the 681? I would, after the 665 top end needed replace go OEM 681 top end or the 675.
I had a chance to buy one NIB for $325 and passed on it. Cant get solo stuff around here and mail order has been iffy at best getting parts for my 637 top handle when needed.
-
It is the 681's little brother. Will probably take your advise and go 681 P&C.
Shep
-
I saw that Baileys has the Dolmar 7900 P&C $168. Won't this fit on the 665? The Dolmar/Makita BBK is listed for 6401-7900 Dol/Mak-681 Solo. Solo 681 kit is $238. Or should I have said is there any difference in the Solo 52mm & the Dolmar 52mm cylinders other than the base gasket?
Shep
-
Just guessing here. But wouldnt you have to run a thick spacer to use a stock oem dolmar 7900 cylinder on a 681 with 1mm more stroke? Throwing off the port timing.
The afm BB7900/681 kits I thought come with 2 different thickness gaskets to give you the extra 1mm stroke of the 681?
-
The BBK uses a .5mm base gasket for 7900 and a 1.5mm base gasket. Unless the OEM 681 has radically different port timing numbers than the OEM 7900 timing numbers (since the BBK works on both) I wouldn't think timing would be a factor. What I really want to know is there any difference in the cyls. other than price.

Username Dozerdan here would know, Dan Henry = PP372 PP346 PP084 I used to have, still got the 45cc 346. He runs a saw shop in Pa and sold both solo and dolmar. Probably ported 681 and 7900 and could tell you everything you need to know.
I think he even posted his phone number, if not I can get it for you. ;)

Dan said yes on the 7900 cyl. on the 665-681. Use the 1.5mm cyl. gasket.

Anybody out there still running a 681. Had mine for maybe 4yrs now. Not one problem but I'm hearing they have some issues.
-
The Helsel's bought some for their main falling saws for day in day out work and they couldnt survive going through cranks and bearing issues.
Others that tried them for real work saws everyday use on the job (not firewood cutting) said the upper right av was a weak point and gave them up too. They got tired of down time with solo and parts ordering.
-
Dan had some out had 5 come back with broke cranks (still under warranty) used by pro fallers. Solo replaced em with 675's. Concerns me as I have a 665 waiting for the 681 jug. Gonna do it anyway let the chips fall where they may.
Shep
-
I bought mine from Dan. Prolly not used near as much as pro guys but my saw sure has done alot of noodling last few years. I like it well enough to fix it if something happened. One heck of a saw.
-
Dan told me the Dolmar 7900 P&C works on the 665-675-681 using the 1.5mm cyl. gasket. I bought 2 from Baileys when they had free ship in Dec. last year. Both have the lightweight piston (non windowed). Hoping the lighter piston will further reduce stress on the crank. May buy an OEM or AM windowed piston to use in the Makita 6401. Use the OEM in the Solo. Kyle @ E&E says they can still get the windowed piston. Their warehouse has old stock. I just did a BBK on my other 6401 basic WP about 8 tanks so far. That thing is a "BEAST". Everybody says the OEM makes more power if it does WOW.

Good luck on your quest for a good 681 crankshaft. I am not sure that they ever built a good one. I have seen 6 of the 681's that broke the crank. The first two that I had seen had port work done and ran the 272 Husky coils. I assume that the crank couldn't take the higher rpms. The next 4 that broke were on bone stock 681's.
Solo has been good about it. When I get one with a bad crank they replace the whole saw, no age limit. I have to send them the complete old saw for replacement. They will then replace the 681 with a new 675 as they have no 681's left.
If you still want the longer stroke of the 681, I would suggest sending out your Dolmar crank and have it stroked.
Later
Dan
Here is the last 681 broken crank that I had in. The crank is also twisted and you can see the big end rod pin has moved out and it also chewed up the engine case.
Question Dan, when you say twisted, do you mean that the counter weights are now not in line because one has spun a liitle more than the other due to the big end moving? Are they all failing the same?
The answer is yes to both of your questions. Solo tells me that they have corrected the problem with crank failures. The crank that I pictured above was from a 681 replacement saw for another bad crank.

Is there a specific year model on the 681 crank failures?

Looks an awful lot like a Dolkita 6400 in shape
-
It is the Solo designed 665 closed quad port version.Even has the indentation for the Dolmar side mount decomp in the top cover.
-
The saw I have in pic is a 681. All the same but cylinder and pistons. I ran that 681 in pic.
-
I know a guy that bought 2-3 solo 675 and they out cut a husky 385 in timed cuts. Dont remember wood or size tested but know both owners.
-
I don't doubt that IMO the 385 was a pig and sounded like a chicken farting in a tin can.

Art said one time his race 026 with 084 carb was faster in the same 8x8 cant wood. But that is expected IMO. I bet that solo 675 was loud with that muffler mod.

Those front exits like that are loud

Posted by Adam Clarke = Artzer's brother in law raced 665 a couple weeks back and got 4th? place in the 4 cube stock appearing class. Less than a tank through the saw, all factory minus a small muffler mod and race chain. torquey little devil!!! lol!
Far as I understand a stock 665 with race chain. WOW WTG
Video info posted Published on Sep 3, 2014 Stock Solo 665 with a minor muffler mod. Brand new, still on it's first tank of gas. Spanked the Husky 562's that were running...lol

Less than a tank through it before that vid was taken. Race chain. Sounded a little fat on first 3rd of the cut.
-
The heat builds up in the cylinder and they are not fat any more?
-
Nick was running my Dolmar 6800 at a GTG last year this time and notice how awful rich it was at the beginning of the first cut and how perfect the mixture was in the second cut after the saw warmed up a little.

Feedback from a user of the solo 681.
I forgot about my Solo 681 . It flat screamed with this 16" bar on it. . Kinda hard on my back from all the bending over though. But, it did fit in the rack on my snow go. And it would start and run pretty good. . With an 8 tooth 3/8 s I had seemingly no end to the chain speed.
I wrecked the maincase on it with a 36" bar. There just wasn't the meat around the bar studs to take the extra stress of the long bar. Had I stuck with short bars on it. It probably would have made me money. As it was I gave it to a friend that is good at tinkering with stuff.
I made it about 50 cord with me. But it was a good feeling saw. It had more power than the 372 Huskies 75cc and the 460 Stihl .

Just waiting on return call. Hope it works out for you folks into these.

If you want to work on your own deals till or if they show up here. http://www.rottmansales.com/
-
Are the 675 top ends available?
-
You could still get the top ends, just a lot more expensive than the Dolmar counterparts. Just have to run a spacer or have the chamber cut to clear the piston at TDC for a Dolmar kit.
-
I would still love to compare 665 to the 415 I have. All stock for stock.
-
It would be note resting to see. A 6400 even with the open port is strong.
-
Only thing that still bothers me is parts if needed on the solo. Main reason I never jumped in on the last batch sold for $508 plus shipping.
-
True. That is a problem.

I just bought 2 of these on Monday, and in all 10 of them sold in the group buy we just did earlier this week.

I was running the part numbers again to see if you can find them.
Merged threads too, because the crank part number was found here in google search and cost. Good lucking buying one though.

@adam32 I know you bought a couple from last batch sold.
Where are you getting parts if they are needed? Online parts I just ran was poor showing.

Do these Solos use a differen't carb than the Dolmar/Makita versions? IIRC, I remember reading somewhere that the Solo has a Walbro while the Dolmar has a Zama.
-
Yes Aaron on carbs.
-
Can the Solo Walbro be easily swapped to the Dolmar.......and if so, is it a worthwhile swap? I'm helping my friend with his Dolkita 6401. His better half asked me what she could surprise him with for Christmas. I directed her toward's the 7910 p/c set on Nate's site. 8)
-
I would think it's a direct swap. I,like the zama after poleman gets done with them.
-
372 walbro have been swapped on to dolmars too, Aaron. I dont remember what was involved though.
-
I put the 372 xtorq carbs on them. A decent bit of work and the air filter is sideways a little after wards.
-
Thanks for he info guys. Thinking we'll send his carb to Poleman.

Just got off the phone with Rottman sales. They should be signing up tomorrow. Said they have some NOS Solo Partner and another brand I cant remember .

Info Dan posted when the solo first came out. He was a dolmar and solo dealer.
Old post of mine that was shared with me from Dan. Solo Dolmar deal.
Here is some info that was passed on by a solo, dolmar, redmax dealer when the 681 first arrived.
I have found in my own experience that it is difficult to find a local dealer for solo and that the online parts ordering doesn't seem to work for the 681. This was when the 681 was first released.
(((((The new Solo 681 is now here, 81cc (80.7) same basic weight as the 7900 but with some major improvements.
The 681 has a larger air filter then the 7900, that is why the air filter cover is shaped a little different.
681 also has the good Walbo carburetor not the typical cheap Zama from China like the Dolmar.
681 has the side chain tensioner in the case like a Stihl not in the side cover like Dolmar.
681 also has a large top AV spring. The Dolmar had problems with them breaking.
681 also has a better bracket set up on the AV mount to the top handle. 681 bracket is bolted to the top cover. The Dolmar has a strap that wraps around the handle and it is always turning and putting stress on the top av spring.
681 has a two year YES TWO YEAR commercial warranty.
Parts for the Dolmar are a problem, you have to find a dealer.
Parts for a Solo can be ordered online from Solo at the same price they cost from the dealer.
At first you will think that it is built by Dolmar. That is not the case. This saw is built by Solo. Solo does sell the large Dolmar 9010, they call it the 694 but the 681 and its smaller sisters 675, 665 are Solo built.
From what I understand is that Dolmar did not design all of the 7900. Solo designed a lot of the parts for that saw. They were to be sold together in joint venture like the large Dolmar 9010.
Dolmar took all of the credit for the 7900 and Solo got the shaft.
Solo took it one step farther and made the same basic saw with a larger engine and a few improvements.
OK I have had a lot of questions about installing the 681 parts on the 7900 to make it 81cc.
Both of the above saws have the same bore size of 52mm. The 681 jug will bolt right on the 7900 case the muffler and carb boot will line right up but the jug is taller to accommodate the longer stroke so you will loose compression with the 7900 crank. I am sure that you can put the 681 crank in the 7900 case. That is a lot of work and with the cost of the crank and labor its not economically feasible.
-

Guy from NC looking at the 675 said he has one of the 665 's with the tweaked cranks in it. So he is looking for a crank.
Seller of the used 675 had a 681 that crank did the same thing. He has another 681 stock that has been ok.
I'm just scared of them do to this and never bought one because of this even when thay have been sold for the $400 665's new.
@adam32 didnt you buy 2 of them, any work usage or just racing? Holding up?
