Title: Dolmar 7900 Red Top
Post by: 660magnum on November 13, 2013, 05:05:42 pm
I was at the local Dolmar dealer today and they had a old early model 7900 red top that a big tree branch had fallen on.

With the 6400/7900, the brake lever attachment on the starter side is a cast stalk that sticks up off the left crankcase half.

With this old red top, the brake lever bracket was broken off and the red plastic cover was all broken around this area.

Rather than replacing the case or case half, they planned to use it out back to block up big firewood as it was a trade-in.

I have been looking for a Nos red top for a 7900 for a while with no luck. Might this dealer have a complete top in stock? Could someone check with him to find out for me?

Thanks for any and all help!

The red tops were the first 6400/7300/7900 Dolmar Chainsaws

I don't know for sure when it was because of old stock remaining at dealers, but some where around early 2006, they were changed to have black cylinder and air filter covers.

There's really no difference in performance - just the color of the covers.

There have been three or four little changes over the years up through the last of the straight 7900's before the 7910 came out but none of these had anything to do with actual performance.

These include a optional heavy duty air filter assembly, a limiter for the upper AV spring, different design for the chain catcher, a different ground strap attachment setup, and a larger bearing in the clutch/brake drum.

On this side of the pond there was no black top 7900.

However, I don't think the color is a match for the red case etc of the US blacktop saws isn't it more orange?

I am not sure I understand...

There is a red case? Like Solo case?

I never ordered any case, but I am pretty sure they are orange.

In this country it is sort of a redish orange. Some see it as orange and other's red.

the black top had a different flywheel and coil setup compared to the red , the black top had a touch more power because the ignition timing was advanced a touch more than the red top

The black hood (Red Coil) 2005+ models are a little stronger and nicer running than the older Orange hood (Black Coil) 2001-2004 models.

Now the 7910 is a different setup yet. We have a customers that like the 7910 much better than the 7900 as well.

Just a thought. One could buy a saw with red tops. Remove covers and put updated black covers on it then recoup $$$ spent by reselling the saw.

Was it late 06 or early 07 the dolmar 7900 and makita 7901 started being sold in dealers? I think being sold in dealers was early 07.

The PS-6400's & PS-7900 we had in December 2001. The PS-7300 came through in January 2002.

We had number 12 & 13 saws produced in that 64-73-7900 serial number series.

PS-6400 #011030012 & 011030013

I picked up 1 of those, be aware it's the old style with the big holes inside & not the mesh/ newer style. It will work just fine for my needs :)

Yep. Red = old style and first ones.  I had old Makita grey one like it.

Red tops are still a stocked dealer part in Europe.  I got some shipped over, along with the euro short spikes.  The top cover is for left side decomp, too, but without the decomp hole drilled.  Price wasn't bad; the challenge is in finding someone to buy them and ship them to you.
