Title: Cant stand
Post by: man of stihl on May 09, 2011, 06:52:17 pm
I'm going to build a cant stand. Is there a standard height to these?

18" to bottom of cant.  Mine is a copy of the one sandman made for a ohio gtg a long time ago. Pics or  measurements or wait till you come to the gtg?
Also could use 2  8x8 on top of 2 10x10 perfect.

I will show video of both.

Might have to take still pics. 8x8 on top of 10x10 going opposite ways. stock 3120 with a 9T I believe.

Better one of cants used to make a stand.

I like how the base is on yours.
I was thinking there was an angle long ways between the legs to lay sandbags on but i like your base much better. No need for sand bags on your stand. Its a good thing you posted pics. :P

I need to get one built out of metal similar to that one. That might be a summer project for me.

These are the ones the NYS Lumberjack Association use at all of our shows.
They're used for Stock & Hot saws, crosscut, singlebuck, and bowsaws

Here's my cant / log stands I built in development for the last 10 years. Will take round or square log, also verticle block for standing block chop. Just bore cut a slot with chainsaw on bottom end of block for the 4" strap to go through and winch down solid.
Newest  ones for ground use will be 6x6" aluminum hinged to fold up flat and 3/4" plywood also hinged to fold in half.

I read above 18" to the bottom of the cant, is that the standard height for saw contest or is that just what you made for personal use?

In my area midwest for cold start racing yes (saw not started setting on ground with hands on cant).

Varies everywhere else and  depends on show.

Think I'm going to build mine with a 6x3' base and 6' long top 12 or 14" wide. 2x2" angle iron is $2 a foot at the scrap yard. Going to buy cants in 8' or 10' whatever he has when he gets to them this week or next.

Bet you go bigger. ;)  Be nice to put 10x10 side by side or 12x12's

I shortened it a foot to go wider up top. I can always go and get more steel and make it longer or make a kicker off the end to get farther off the base. If I have 10' cants I can cut off both ends for about 4'.

Sweeeeeeeeeeet   8)

Do you have a back lip?  Where cant pulls into?

Wish my cant stand was wider now days for firewood saw testing with the big rounds.

Need bar in middle IMO.   If you ever run 8x8 or 10x10 by themselves and when they get shorter.

One side has the angle turned up. I may weld a small loop for putting verticals in on both sides. I kept changing my mind and ran out of angle. Going to get 20' more and make 2 ribs down the middle and then some braces. Going to be a heavy thing when done. It's not far from taking 2 people to move.

There's 38' of 2" in it so far. Be another 16-18' tomorrow. Should be able to hold a truck up.

I'm going to add a couple braces for logs when the metal place opens Monday. There's no flex when I put those in there.

When you need to do some test cuts and your cutting area outback is still standing in water. Improvise and overcome the set back. aka redneck. 😋😉
