Title: Husky 61 floods....
Post by: R.Singletary on August 15, 2014, 07:46:50 pm
Hello, i have a Husky 61 a friend wanted me try to fix. I started and it seemed like it was floodin, it would run and idle, but wouldnt rev up. i took the air filter off and started it. You could see the gas comin back thru the carb. Mind you, this saw has not run much over an hour, look at how clean the head is in the picture, you could eat off it...lol.  So i checked the adjustment screws, the LOW was about 3/4 of a turn out and the HIGH was turned out a couple of turns. so i reset the adjustment screws to about 1 1/4 turns out. couldnt get it to start. So i started to ajust them out. Finally i got it started, but only after i adjusted the srews out about 2 1/2 times.Started the saw and Same thing, boggs or floods. The closer i adjust them in the harder it is to get the saw started till it wont start. I kitted the saw thinkin that would fix it, nope same thing. i am not the best tuner, but i can tune a saw good enough to cut well. Never seen this before....HELP...

The best way to tell if it is flooding is to pull the plug and see if it is wet.   If it looks damp but not wet it is not flooding.

I would think to go threw the carb and rebuild it. That is where I would start. The saw is clean but still old. The diaphragms will only take so much before they become fatigued.

I think the carb was rebuilt, he says it was kitted. Is the idle screw set to where it will idle? I had one that I couldn't get the H or L screws to set after rebuilding the carb until I realized that I never set the idle screw back. Few turns in of the idle and then was able to set the H and L without issue. I'm not so sure that's your issue but might be worth a try. I seem to recall low compression being a cause of fuel coming back out the carb also.

Go back and close the H needle down to 1-1/4  then, try backing out the low speed from 3/4 till it idles. THEN, adjust the high speed...

Sorry friends, it is a 66, i have tryed everything you guys suggested more than once...uggg...i even took the carb off my 266xp, its freshly kitted and tuned and same thing. pull the plug, wet as hell. tryed a brand new plug, same thing ,wet as hell.so any way, i started looking at it and i noticed gas comin out of the cap, pretty new cap, so i tighten it. Then i thought i would check the fuel line fur cracks or anything like that you know, i pulled it off and it had pressure. check the spark plug, wet put line back on and shook  the saw a bit .Unhooked the line, pressure, check the spark plug, wet. so i did one more thing. i let it sit in the sun fur about 20 min.,same thing, pull the line and there would be pressure ,check the spark plug, wet as hell. So would this be the tank vent prblem, if so, how do i change it. If its a cap problem, what other husky caps fit the 66 or can i just use the oring from other Husky Caps. And if its not this....suggestion????

It sounds like the crank case is full of fuel to me.

Turn the jets on the carb all the way off.
Remove the plug.
Hold the throttle wide open.
Pull the rope and until you do not see any more spray coming out of it.
Take compressed air and blow down the spark plug hole.
Repeat this process a couple of times.

Put the spark plug back in and pull it over three times and remove it to see if it is wet.
If it is no longer wet then crack open the jets half way and try starting it.
If it does not start pull the plug again and see if you need to richen or lean out the fuel mixture.

Check the metering lever in the carb. Should be right about flush with carb body.  Had a saw qcting exactly how you stated doing that to the other mechanic today. I checked that lever and good as new

Hello every one, thank you fur all the help and comments with the 66. i finally figured the flood problem out, and now it runs like a champ. i went thru the carb again, still flood. i had noticed earlyer that around the muffler it was quite oily , so i pulled the muffler screen and it was so plugged. i left it out and started the saw and instantly, it ran right up. i put a new screen in it and it runs great now...
