Title: Aftermarket 048 piston/cylinder.
Post by: Eccentric on December 04, 2014, 12:43:23 am
A friend of a friend (long story) has an 048AV that the dealer has told him has a scored p/c.  He wants to get it running.............and the task has fallen to me.

I haven't torn it down yet...............but I'm hoping it has a salvageable cylinder.  Are there any decent AM pistons out there (such as Meteor) for this saw?  I've seen some no-name AM slugs for sale for this model.........but I'm skeptical.  Are there any AM jugs around for them?  I gather this is somewhat of an obscure model.  I don't know much about Stihls....

Alternatively................I may soon be in the market for a good used p/c...

Yeah that's what I saw when searching Northwood's listings a while back...

Can not see that there's anything wrong with this one . . .

That one does looks good enough to give it a shot.  I'm just peeing in the wind until I get the saw and pull the jug however.  If the jug's shot..............then the saw'll be retired (unless I can find a reasonably priced good used p/c).

There sure seems to be a lot of interrelationship with those Stihls in that size and up through the 064? They are all 52mm?

There would have to be a wrist pin match then a comparison of deck height and skirt length?

That's an interesting point.  Maybe there is some interchange.   Meteor does make an 064 piston....

With the Meteors you can look up the deck heights and skirt lengths.

When you get the 048 and pull the piston, you can compare?

That's a good idea.  I just remembered that I downloaded the 2014 Meteor catalog a while back...

I would almost guess 20 thou higher deck would work .Of course if every thing else is on it would throw the ex port timing back some .Which isn't much of a problem, just raise the port some .Due to the fact it's an older cousin of the 038   series I would guess stock it's around 46 thou head deck /piston and around 20-22 degree down between the ex opening and the transfers .

You know like the 038 you cut around 22 thou more or less if you shave the cylinder bottom any way if you put a can of soup to one .

I have 2 048's but you don't hear much about them .It's been said at the time they came out they had the highest power to weight ratio of it's time period. One of mine needs rings ,the other a  clutch side seal .I have the parts just don't have the time to do it right now .

I did a little bit of research on this .According to what I could fish out of the IPLs' the 048 uses a 13 mm piston pin and lists the pin bearing as 13-17 -14.5 .The 064 from what I can see is a 12 mm pin ,bearing 12-17-13 .

Now the big question .Does this mean the rod small end is 1.5 mm wider on the 048 or would there be clearance  using the 12-17-13 bearing or finding a 12-17- 14.5 if they make them ?

1.5MM isn't much but if it hangs on the inside of the pin bosses that wouldn't work .I really don't know, never tried it .

Very good info.  Thanks guys.  I may have a good used OEM 048AV P/C coming soon.  Will measure pin width and such while I have things apart.
