Title: Poulan/Craftsman 20" 46cc
Post by: TedB. on December 28, 2014, 09:11:15 pm
I picked up a 20" Craftsman (red) Poulan ,a 358.350210 cheap, ran nice but wasn't oiling the chain.I guess this is a common problem with these.I replaced the oil pump and put a new Oregon 20LPX chain on it.Man, does this saw cut! Has plenty of power, really throws the chips with this chain.I'm impressed with it so far.Aren't these the same as a 295 Pro and a 2775? The question I have is, the AV rear handle seems to move around in the spring eyes quite a bit. Anyone else have had this problem?I haven't looked into it yet, but was wondering if there's supposed to be a bushing in the spring eyes to center it in the mounting screws? Thanks, Ted. :)

On the PP 295's that I have worked on I do not recall a bushing in the anti vibration spring.    I have seen the screws work loose or have seen them stripped out.   I just tighned down the screw real well and keep an eye on it.

Yep.  Seen the screws loosen up or strip out.  I put a bigger self-tapping screw in one to get things tight again.  Some of those red Craftsman 46/20 saws are the same as a PP295/PP4620.....................while others are close, but with a chromed piston and bare bore.

I checked it, screws loosened up.If it keeps happening, I'll make some thin rubber washers to put under the screw heads. Thanks! :D

The washers sound like a good idea.   Usually the plastic is enough resistance to keep them from moving but saws do have a lot of vibration going on.

Nice.  I've noticed that some of the Craftsman versions have a bare bore and plated piston rather than the chromed bore and bare piston of the Poulan Pro versions.  Some of the green Poulan version have the bare bore as well.  There are quite a few different variants.  For just about every one of the 46cc Poulan and Poulan Pro variants, there are Type 1 through Type 4.  Various Craftsman models correspond (more or less) to some of those Poulan models and types.

Had one of these dropped off today. Craftsman 20" 46cc. Looks like the PP295 with normal clutch cover etc in dark green.
I will look for the sears model number on it later and take a pic.

Here's a earlier Sears version I picked up off C-list a while back, either a type 1 or 2, it has the earlier style muffler and really runs well...... ;D

I've had trouble with the rear spring screws on mine, especially the one that threads into the colored plastic case extension, so I modified it a bit.  I drilled a hole in the rear handle so I could use a cap screw inserted down from above, and a nut and star washer.  I had to cut the cap screw to the right length.  I also added a star washer to the screw that goes into the black plastic handle.  It's worked well.

Not a bad idea Chris.   Those do come loose all the time.

Yep so far every one has come in loose.  1 was missing bolt and stripped.  I went to a larger thread longer stihl plastic screw in bolt.  So far good.

I have two of these saws the first one is green with the black muffler and the other is red with the silver muffler which is brand new never cut any wood with it yet.  The first one is my favorite camping saw, it has a very good power to weight ratio oils very well and sounds like a big saw when idling.  I never put a tach to it but sounds like a healthy 13,500 no load rpm if I were to guess.
