Title: 066 crankcase
Post by: jmester on August 07, 2015, 01:53:07 pm
will the early 066 cases with the plug by the oil tank take the bigger flywheel side seal to be able to run the poly flywheel 660 crank. I think it will work but wanted a second opinion.

Poly flywheel set up (crank)  is wider than the alum. Flywheel case from what I've read.  If your case has the 15mm flyweehl side crank seal it should accomdate the poly wheel.

Pretty sure 1996 was when the crank seal was made bigger and poly flywheel used.

Based on the IPL on the 066 the case I would need is 1122 020 2102. That polished case saw I just did runs the 15mm poly crank. And has the plug by the oil tank.  But just want to make sure that is the right part number before I start searching for another case. Reason I am asking is that saw to me pulls harder than a 660 with the 2113 crank case.

The apparent "pull harder" feel is likely from a early (90's) cylinder? The pre EPA Stihl cylinders often had a more free running characteristic about them than the newer so called EPA type cylinders? The first 066 cyl hand no decompresion outlet.

There's nothing more lovely than a early 10mm 044 or, for example, I have a early 025 with the two port cylinder that is more enjoyable than my MS-250 with the four port cylinder and larger bore. The early versions just seemed "more alive" if they were in good shape.

I used a 660 jug and piston off a two year old saw that got squished by a tree. I don't know if the crank case volume is smaller of larger. And that is why it runs better?

I will dig around and see if I have an old aluminum flywheel crank. Think I may have got one some where along the way.

Ok I found two old cases that I got from some buddies of mine one has the small crank the other the large crank. Both have the plug below the oil fill cap. The numbers stamped in to the case halves are different. The fly side for the poly is part number 1122 021 0762 the pto side is 1122 020 2962. On the aluminum fly side is part number 1122 021 0705 and the pto is 1122 020 2905. Those number are about worth less unless some one has them and knows what the crankcase number is. I would guess that they switched to the 660 case at some point and the case part number switched.

Did some digging and reading. Found a lot of this in a technical bulletin. Here is What I found. Part number 1122 020 2102 is the aluminum flywheel crankcase. Part number 1122 020 2103 is the poly flywheel crankcase. Both have the plug under the oil fill cap and a small capacity oil tank. Part number 1122 020 2113 is late 066/early 660 crankcase with old style bar studs. Part number 1122 020 2116 is the most recent crankcase with the new style bar studs the new style studs come around 2007 or there abouts till the end of production.
Funny thing they show no listing in any IPL that i have for the 1122 020 2103 i guess there was a super cession to the 1122 020 2113 case. maybe some one with an old IPL can check my work.

The 1122 020 2103 case was replaced by the 1122 020 2113 case around 1999 or there abouts. that is still on the 066. So that means there is three different cases for the 066. Since the MS 660 did not come around till 2002 or so

My 066 has the early cylinder but poly flywheel. The case is not a MS-660 one. The tank is not see through either.

That is the case. So based on what I have found is that your saw was build some where between 1996 and 1999.Think I am going to try and hunt another one down. I have one here but on the pto side case half the upper spike hole and part of the case is busted off. Wish I had the piece so i could have it welded back.
