Title: poulan pro pole pruner
Post by: maxmag on August 08, 2015, 12:42:52 pm
just bought a pp28pd pole pruner yesterday. I was surprised to see the manual calls for a 50:1 mix ratio. I was used to poulan stuff being 40:1. glad to see it, makes it a lot easier on me. The little thing does a really nice job. Quite happy with my purchase.

Sorta similar to my PP338PT trimmer/pole saw.  Only it appear this is not strato.  Mine got an exhaust port widening and had the muffler opened up a little (stuff happens  ;)).

Do you run the oem poulan pro chain on yours?

I had a ryobi 31cc built poulan PP446ET in for repair once.  I wouldnt put any money in the ryobi built one. Hoping to see the others are better built and back to poulan? http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/poulan/poulan-pro-pole-saw/msg23787/#msg23787

No, actually I'm running a 16" bar with a loop of that Oregon Lo Pro full skip chain they supply on cheap Poulan saws.  I ground off all the shark fin bumpers.  There is actually an Oregon number for that junk but I forget what it is.  It's normally horrible stuff, but ironically I now find I'm keeping an eye out for it!

I had really only done this out of desperation last year when I found myself behind in the firewood gathering, and needed to get a several year dead hickory that was snagged in an ash.  I dropped the ash using the pole saw.  It turned out to work so well that I've kept it on - although this is a 33cc strato engine, mildly ported and muffler modded.  It actually runs quite well.

I bent the bar this year and did an almost decent job straightening it back out.  What the heck, I have other 16" bars, and pole saws just seem to result in bent bars anyway - I think because they get used at awkward angles and you can't really feel what's happening out there.

This is my first pole saw, so for sure on the pinched bars! mine is all stock, but I was really surprised at how well it ran right out of the box. A bump on the idle was all it needed. If it lasts me a couple of years I'll be happy.

What is the chain 3/8LP and is it .050 and what is the DL drive link count.

I am sure you can get some stihl full chisel PS3 or PS made up.  I know I went with PS3 on my echo pole pruner.  Quicker in the cut so I wasnt holding over my head as long.

It is probably full skip Oregon 0.043" with double shark fin bumpers.  Like kickback is a concern on a pole saw!

So how do you like your pp28pd Poulan?  I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on one of these.  One question for you sir?  Does this model have just  2 cylinder head bolts or more, or do you know?  I was told that the Ryobi made the 2-bolted models and I want no part of those.  If anyone else has any insight on this model, feel free to step in.   Many thanks.

As of now, I am still very happy with it. This is my first pole prunner and I was surprised how handy it is to have around. That said, I use it as a home owners tool at this point.

The ryobi one is listed in this below that came into me. His he would have to look at cylinder.

I think that is the model I have .Compared to most pole saws it was inexpensive, about 200 at Lowes .

Cheap or not they do what they are designed to do .Occasional use not pro tree service type work .

GOOD MORNING Gentlemen!   We'll I finally bought one.  Got a Poulan pp28pdt.  Picked it up at TSC for $200 yesterday.  Has the weed eater attachment also. Extends to 12 ft.  This looks like its better made than some of the Poulans I have looked at.  Least it has 4 cyl. bolts.  Only wish it had the adjustable angle bar instead of fixed.  Later I may put a Ryobi on it.  Looked at a slug of models before choosing this one.  Weight was my major concern.  Bout bought a older Husky 326, but was heavy for me.  The 128 model on the lower end of the Husky line was heaver than the 326, but priced decent.   Echo's were heaver yet and higher priced.  Happy with what I have.  After honey-do's are done, I will get out today and run her.  Thanks to all for helping me deside :)

Before I forget to  mention those pole saws/ weed wackers will also take a little tiny tiller head like a Mantis tiller .Sears sells them and others .They come up on flea bay also .

I've never used the weed wacker on mind due to the fact I already have at least a half dozen hanging in the shed. McCulloch,Ryobi ,Stihl ,Echo  and some I forgot the names of .These things are like old chainsaws .About the first time they don't start people give them away .6 dollar carb kit most of the time .

Al, I bought a little electric Mantis last summer for my garden and couldn't be happier with it.  I know the cord is a pain sometimes, but for me the good outweights the bad.  And your right about the weed eaters & such.  If only people would do alittle preventive maint. steps, there equipment would last for years instead of yearly.  Carb. kits usually fix them all.

On the strato versions the little red rubber boot from the intake to the air valve deteriorates - I have to replace it every year.
