Title: Old mag welding
Post by: srcarr52 on November 30, 2015, 03:42:21 pm
Some welding on an old Homelite and a Remington gear drive. Sorry no before pictures, just after welding and finishing.

This Homelite had the lower spike and handle mount broke off. I welded it back on, created the support brace that was missing and filled the deap chain rash spot.

Other side of the Remington with many cracks. Unfortunately cracks do not weld up as nicely as completely broke off pieces because of the contaminates that you can't get out of the crack.

You have been busy Shaun.   Your work always looks good and most important strong.   Get some paint on it and no one will know.

Thanks guys. You can really see the difference in the mag alloy when you're welding it. That old Homelite welded so clean, hardly a porous spot in it when finished off. Right before that I was welding on a Stihl 046 case that just kept blowing black soot everywhere and it was nothing but holes when I sanded it off. I had to weld the Stihl case twice to get the finished surface to look nice.

Anything you guys can do on mag makes me happy.  = Saving stuff for folks.

My nephew is finishing up his welding classes in HS and is being looked at by a company friend I grew up with to be a apprentice. I told him to try and learn about this mag welding too. ;)

He said they had to make a weld and then they bend them on some machine to see where the metal breaks bends  and if the weld holds. Lot different then when they made us stick weld in 79-80 LOL.
