Title: Poulan 8500 pro
Post by: coralbids.com on February 03, 2016, 07:58:25 pm
I was browsing cl for a saw and it dawned on me. I remember looking at this saw as a kid on my fathers workbench and thinking how impressive it looks and how huge it is. I never got the chance to see it run, but my father used it during hurricane bob to cut down five trees. Now at this point in my life a groundskeeper and **** side work extraordinaire landscapes galore I have seen the saws and Stihl is my fave for the excellent engineering. So anyways this morning I was on Craigslist and I was like," hold on a sec the saw just sitting in the shed, the huge Poulan, I should get it" !!! I Called my dad and he was thrilled I wanted it so today I acquired the saw I always really wanted and today I replaced a fuel line and tomorrow I will attempt to fire it up!!! And I already have a huge tree I need to cut up with it. I'm syked!!!(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160204/c1e618bab90c88ba4b3b277511083a3d.jpg)

That right there is a strong 85cc poulan and a collector saw at that.  Hold onto that one IMO.

Ok I have a question. On the saw it says 1/2 pt to one gallon which is 16:1, does it really need to be so rich?

I use a 100% synthetic oil and mix it 32 to 1.

That was for the old oils 16/1.  I run 32/1 but would have no troubles running my stuff at 40/1 either.  Just tune the carb to your mix.

Very nice! That's definitely a keeper. There are not that many around in that kind of condition.

 Welcome to Chainsaw Repair!

Great looking saw!!  Sounds good too.  About the only way to get the mixture set good, is running the saw in some large log, something big enough to make that saw work a little.  Want just a tad rich, but will smooth out and make power once under load.  Great saws the 8500! The envy of us that don't own one...yet.

Gregg,

Gregg,
Thanks Gregg, I'll try tuning it that way. I've been battling snow but I do have a job for it. Can't wait to get it cranking!!!

Geeze this saw is a beast, it made a meal out of this tree and served nothing but chips!!!! LOL!!! I'm so happy with it, I think I could have turned up the hi on the carb but I didn't want to beat on it.

Like all the 77 and 85cc saws in this series, that 8500 has a governed carb.  Be sure to tune the H side in the wood.  At WOT unloaded, the governor can 'fool' you into thinking it's set richer than it really is.  Best to tune 'em in the wood per my sig line below.

Also, keep a close eye (ear actually) on the tune of that saw when you use it.  Any sudden change (leaning out) or a need to richen it up during the day can mean an air leak is developing.  You're running what is about a 30 year old saw.  Crankshaft seals (and other rubber parts) have a finite life.  I've seen seals on saws that have sat for decades work fine at first when the old beast is brought back into service............only to fail unexpectedly.  That's why I change out the seals on old saws that I put back into service.

Not trying to scare you.  Just want to make sure you don't burn up you Dad's old saw.  If you're just making a few cuts every now and then you should be fine so long as you pay attention to the tune.
