Title: 3/8" pitch .058 gauge on a Stihl 090
Post by: blackoak on May 10, 2016, 04:32:07 pm
I got a few saw this past week and this was one of them. A very nice 090 with a 66" GB Titanium roller tip bar that is .058 gauge. I don't have any .404 pitch in 058 gauge. I do have maybe enough  in 3/8" pitch. This saw will very likely not be used very much, Hell I got an 066 with a 36" that seldom gets used. I would however love to fire it up with this bar on it and see what it will do. I hate to have to go and buy the 404 in 058 just to do it if I have enough 3/8 in 058 to make a chain. I have a 3/8" rim to fit the clutch drum so that will not be a problem. The saw also has a 24" bar with it that has a 404 gauge chain that I have ran it with, but I feel I'm not getting the true 090 experience without running the 66" bar.

I dont see why not. I would do it.

Heck I ran 3/8 050 on my ported 084 and stock 3120.

You must be a sucker for punishment. ;D A 66" bar on anything is going to be hard to handle without a stinger and a willing accomplice but if you really want to change the tip to 3/8.

You ain't a kidding about it's going to be hard to handle. Just carrying it into my shop from my truck, I knocked over a half dozen things and had to have the old lady to hold the door open for me to get it inside. I guarantee it's not going to punish this old out of shape fat boy to much ;D. Most of my time is spent wrenching on saws not running them.

I don't have to change bar tip to 3/8,  it just  has a round roller tip on it that's .058 gauge. It will work with any size of pitch of chain as long as the drivers .058 gauge. The only thing I have to change is the rim on the clutch drum on the saw to 3/8

I would think just simply because an 090 has almost unlimited torque by comparrison it would do better with .404 chain ..404 x .058 is getting hard to find but if you look around I'm sure you can find it .

One thing about it with that long of a bar it would probably last a life time no more than it would be used .

A guy couple years ago showed up at a GTG at Bill Poors place with a long bar 090 .Talk about a hand full ,wow .

I find it really odd that a bar that long isn't .063, specially if it originally was a Stihl 3001/3002 mount bar.

Have you checked that there isn't just a "misprint" in the specs of the bar?

It's surprising,I agree .However that 48" usable on the Homelite in  my avatar picture is .058 .I had a 32" Mac 10 series mount that was .404 ,050 before I changed the tip .

There was alot of those 60"+ 058  GB roller nose hybrids being cleared out not to long ago = few years back.  Remember a 60" being at my house on  friends saw.

I looked it up on flea bay and you can find .404 by 58 chisel .It's not over  priced .A few years back I bought some of the last .404 by 58 skip tooth the Baileys had .Fact it was cheap, like a buck a foot .

Here's the only markings I can find on the bar, a sticker that looks like it's missing part of it, but I assume the 58SX is indicating 058 gauge and the HS60 is a 60" bar.

If you have about 12 feet of it left I will be happy to triple your money Al.

Then I'd have have to buy some if I needed any .--Flea bay! If it's not there now it will be some time .I even found some .404 by 50 before I changed the nose on that McCulloch 32" bar to 3/8" .

The big old ox of an 090 it wouldn't make much difference what you put on it,chisel, semi chisel, chipper, full skip or full compliment .It's got enough grunt to chew through anything .

Bump.
I recommend .404 chain on that 5 foot bar 090.
I tried 3/8 .063 (75LG) on my 090-60" and had terrible chain stretch resulting in constant chain derailing. Put .404 on... end of problem.
My bar roller nose is the large 2 7/8" too....

You can certainly use 3/8" chain on it but really .404 would be better,i dunno about where you are but .058 .404 is easy to get here. Our shop used to rent an 090 with a 60" bar,but we had a helper handle mounted on the end of the bar.It was used to cut stacks of fresh cut lumber to length and stuff like that.Of course it was an enourmous sharpening job for whichever mechanic was given it,but we used (Like many others) skip tooth chain to lessen the job.

That 48" 143 drive link chain in my avatar picture is about a half hour, two beer job .Thank heavens it doesn't need filed very often .Of course not it doesn't get used that often .
