Muffler mod a 2040

Never done this before, I'm wondering if I can just drill several 3/8 holes in the face of the muffler and pinch off the exhaust port on the side.

Or just enlarge the existing outlet.

Somewhere I'd read (?) that the location of the existing outlet has a tendency to melt the plastic in that area. That's why I was looking to direct exhaust towards the front plus enlarging it. Did I read that incorrectly and misunderstand what I read?

A deflector can be used to direct the exhaust away from the plastic.  I'd be hesitant to cut holes in the front of the muffler as I've seen fires started firsthand with front exit muffler mods on bigger saws.

I have several Stihl MS250's/025's. If you bury the bar with these, the front outlet on the muffler will let the exhaust set the bark of the log on fire while you are making the cut.

Yes, as your holding the saw it's on the RH side of the muffler that contacts the engine.

Could you just make a slit and open like this front muffler mod?
