D44
« on: October 04, 2013, 12:40:58 am »
Hi.  So I have a D44 purchased at a garage sale a few years ago (for $2!) and after a carb kit it's a runner.  Now, while tearing down after breaking the clutch spring I find there is an extra flat washer next to the spring washer in the clutch.  This item isn't included in the IPL from Mac.  Anyone know if this is a legit piece that's supposed to be there.  I'm not talking about the shroud washer between the clutch and the housing.  This is inside the clutch between the cluch mechanism and the drum and is about the same size as the spring washer.  I'm only asking because the spring washer is broken too and I can't help wonder if that extra washer contributed to that.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers,
Ken

I didn't dig out my IPL on that model but that wave washer was probabley to keep the drum from rattling when the saw was at idle .Which it probabley did any way .

You could probabley get another wave washer and call it a day or just take it out and nobody would  be the wiser .

What I'd like to know is why in the name of good sense they ever made a right hand start  in the first place .They couldn't make up their minds which side to start  it on or what model of carb ,a great mystery .

Thanks Al.  Yeah I can see the point of the spring washer but was more concerned about the existence of the flat washer next to it inside the clutch.  Eventually did get a new spring washer from Old Mower Parts from their NOS supply (can't believe that stuff is still around but happy it is).  Ended up putting it all back together but without the flat washer because I think it was placed in there at some point to compensate for the broken spring washer.  Fired it up on the weekend and the clutch is much quieter now (but that machine still freaks out the neighbours  ;D).
