mini mac 110 refresh
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:54:02 pm »
uuuuuuuuuuh gawd why do i let myself get talked into these? :)
a good friend called early in the week and asked if i wanted to fix one up for his old man. i said sure why not :-X he knows how i feel about them but it's for his dad blah blah blah.....
when the family went in to bentons farm equipment back in the mid 80's for some saws, this one was thrown in as a freeby (they were $99 bux plus tax then). when you have somebody throwing down almost $2500 on 4 saws, you throw them some "goodies". well, that little mm110 became one of the old mans favorite tools around the farm and woodlot. finaly died a few years after being used alot and maybe too much. they were cleaning out one of the back sheds and came across it sitting in the dirt getting burried. been there for 18-19 or so years. no "before" pics but you get the idea.
so she needed a piston (found a good used one)
new rings
new crank bearings
new crank seals
new clutch
new drum and bearing
new points/condensor
new starter spring and rope
new air filter
new fuel line
rebuilt carb
a few new screws
new bar/chain
everything went as smooth as cowshit in june with no hook ups or fustration.
oh i know it's far more than what most would throw into one but i guess the 'sentimental' price is priceles.
not new looking by no means, but a huge improvment from what it was.

the streaks on the piston is the oil. the piston i had was like a brand new one:

i have a sever hate for these little mini macs. when i was at bentons farm equipment we were doing literaly truck loads of warrenty returns for black and decker every month. you get good and fast but you don't get over the sick feeling when they land on your bench. :P never had any of the 310's or 315's come in, just these 110's. they made us good money, but i'm sure we all aged faster.
who else has a chainsaw built where your dad worked and lives? ;)

I have one just like that. Sometimes it runs. There's nothing wrong with it that wasn't always.

I don't remember mine being B&D?

I'm not sure if that one I have with the slide pipe is a 110 or 120 . You can't get the carb rebuild kits any more for the ones with the Zama carb .There's no middle ground on a mini mac .It either runs good or not at all .Usually more of the later than the former .

I think everybody  should have one because if you can wrench a mini you can wrench anything .

I've got a pile of parts myself .I'm not sure if you can wear out a set of rings on a mini because I've seen very few that even had a replacement chain .They just one day wouldn't start and that was the end of them, stuck in a corner and forgotten for 25 years .

i get to see one now and then that's been beat to death. :) no idea how they kept on running all these years but they do show up. this one decided to shave some piston and ring material into the transfer ports. none of the ports were ever beveled on these saws. good thing there wasn't any damage to the cylinder, just the piston. put the grinder to all the ports and smoothed some other castings in the intake and exhaust areas before putting the newish piston in. good little runner now. not that i ever want to see the insides of one again.

I don't think McCulloch ever intended them to run for years and true to design most did not .Like I said I never really have seen one that was worn out  ,It was generally carb or oiler problems .

Really though the basic design of the engine was not bad it was the rest of the saw that left a lot to be desired .I think I might have half a dozen ,most 110 or 120 s' with a couple others  .some intact and some I canabalized for parts ,freebies every one .
