picking up my first Mac today
« on: December 04, 2013, 10:22:30 am »
I've owned many brands of saw but always shyed away from the macs. That's probably because I still have vivid memories of my dad throwing his mac-10 across the yard after numerous problems and trips to the mechanic. I realize now it was probably just a case of it being a lemon and/or having a bad chainsaw repair guy, so I'm getting a pro mac 610, in probable good shape. Can't wait to get onto something different!

A 610 is a decent saw .I ran the snot out of one for the 8-9 years I sold firewood and I still have it although it doesn't see much use these days .

Mcbob, some of us are just slow learners, but as long as we are still learning.....Al that's what I've been reading. When I was told about this saw I started looking up what people thought about it. Everybody seemed to be on the same page on its durability and its weight. With my background the second isn't an issue. This saw seems pretty sound. No chainbrake....fine with me, I don't like them anyway and this saw will be used, not restored. The cover over the muffler has one of the fins broken and missing, I'm fine with that also. Everything else is accounted for. Doesn't seem to have too many hours on it. 156 compression. Ill cut with it this weekend if the weather holds, clean it up and snap some pics.

The chain brakes on those things would screw up a rocket scientist . I had one fly apart on me in the woods in Knox county Ohio 30 plus years ago .I forgot and left it on a stump and as far as I know it's still there .

That's one tough old saw here .Probabley one of the most durable plastic parts or not .

Yeah surprisingly heavy for their size. Put it though a nice size log, its an animal. Bar oil problems, no surprise there. Neither the auto or manual did anything. Guess ill check the pickup first.

The diaphragm goes out on the pumps .It's got a pair of check valves that go bonkers too limiting the manual portion of the pump .

Give it the diesel fuel treatment .Run a partial tank full of diesel through the oiling system .Sometimes it freshens them up sometimes not .

I'm also guessing RTV shouldn't be in that port?
