Got a choice, what would you do?
« on: May 11, 2014, 11:18:38 am »
So, am trying to put a 272XP piston in a 372XP BB kit. Three base gaskets an am still short 0.009 on the desired 0.020 squish. :'( Am afraid that more gaskets or a copper shim will negate the potential intake timing advantage of the shorter OA height of the 272XP piston, which is 2.0mm shorter OA than the stock and BB piston but the CH of the 272XP piston is 1.5mm taller than the stock or BB piston.

So, if I want to run no base gasket:

I could cut the squish to allow for the increased CH of the 272XP piston with no base gasket
Or
I could cut a pop-up on the piston to give me the 0.020 I want with no base gasket.

First option would allow me to build and test the saw but essentially negate any use of the jug if the 272XP piston experiment yields a ho-hum runner.

Second option would at least save the jug if it turns out to be a ho-hum performer.

The guys that were putting 272 pistons in a 7900 were using a metal shim under cylinder to make it up.

If I had a choice now days I would take a cut squish with stock piston. Just for the fact I could pull the saw down and throw another piston in it without having to have someone cut me a pop up piston.

For a woods port my 52mm had a meteor 064 piston.

For race port 52mm mine had a 038 mag oem piston ( because the wiseco EHP piston wasnt out back then).

That was my original thought, but cutting the squish would negate any further use of the cylinder if the 272XP piston turned out to be a dog.
