Carburetor removal Craftsman 3.3
« on: June 23, 2015, 12:52:00 pm »
Hey all,

I impulse bought a Craftsman 3.3 (20") chainsaw on the cheap (like $2 cheap). The owner said he thought it ran but only ran wide open with no throttle response and just wanted it gone. With the stale gas it came with it started after 4 pulls. Runs on full choke only but bogs bad. I'm just learning saw repair so this should be a great starter. I'm familiar with large engines but the finesse of the small engine repair is very intriguing!

Im certain this saw just needs a new air filter, some fresh fuel lines and filters, and a carb kit. I've started taking it apart so I can order the proper carb kit but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the dang carburetor out of the frame? Is there some secret screw I'm missing. Perhaps an IPL would help? I've even loosened the clamp on the intake boot but that didn't free it up either?

I'm not sure how the AV system works on this saw but as is it seems like the handle is connected to the engine by jell-o. I suspect some mounts are worn out.

Thanks in advance for any input!

To remove carb you need to pull the 2 carb studs on this one if I remember right.  Hint, never try and start with ones old stale gas in future, dump and put fresh even for testing.

Sounds like stiff diaphragms. Also check IMPULSE line, known for cracking.

AV's can be ripped like the ones on my dad's 3300 was after 26 years. I ordered them new through Ordertree.com

Welcome to the site.  You got a grat buy IMO.

Good find, thank you! Is it feasible to just wash out the air filter? It's in good shape, just dirty as heck.

Thinking if you remove the top single screw these come apart. I usually just take apart and use air compressor to blow out inside and out.  But I have washed filters before.  If it is the FLOCKED style be careful as it does come off.

I usually blow the filters off with compressed air.

The anti vibration buffers at the bottom are rubber.   They have a screw thru the center of a black cap.   After removing the screw you can pry out the plastic cap.  The other anti vibration buffers are springs.

That should make a good starter saw.    When you take the carb apart make sure to pay attention to the order of the diaphragms and gaskets.

re: carb disassembly - pay particularly close attention to the little spring. those have a huge innate desire to escape captivity and once they've jumped are almost never seen again.
nice find
