Here is a pic of my PP375. Can see it has the hard, smooth covering like your 3400 has. Also the metal is painted black, instead of bare aluminum. Which leads me to think your 3400, along with decal style, might make your 3400 a very late model.

I sure don't know, but that 4000 style air cleaner could have possibly been a factory thing. When they changed to the Poulan Pro colors and ended that line of saws, they all used the " high top" air filter. So maybe they were down to only that style of filter, and put them on the last of the 3400's instead of producing more of the older style filter covers. Who knows. ;D
