Great looking saw!!  Sounds good too.  About the only way to get the mixture set good, is running the saw in some large log, something big enough to make that saw work a little.  Want just a tad rich, but will smooth out and make power once under load.  Great saws the 8500! The envy of us that don't own one...yet.

Gregg,
Thanks Gregg, I'll try tuning it that way. I've been battling snow but I do have a job for it. Can't wait to get it cranking!!!

Geeze this saw is a beast, it made a meal out of this tree and served nothing but chips!!!! LOL!!! I'm so happy with it, I think I could have turned up the hi on the carb but I didn't want to beat on it.

Like all the 77 and 85cc saws in this series, that 8500 has a governed carb.  Be sure to tune the H side in the wood.  At WOT unloaded, the governor can 'fool' you into thinking it's set richer than it really is.  Best to tune 'em in the wood per my sig line below.

Also, keep a close eye (ear actually) on the tune of that saw when you use it.  Any sudden change (leaning out) or a need to richen it up during the day can mean an air leak is developing.  You're running what is about a 30 year old saw.  Crankshaft seals (and other rubber parts) have a finite life.  I've seen seals on saws that have sat for decades work fine at first when the old beast is brought back into service............only to fail unexpectedly.  That's why I change out the seals on old saws that I put back into service.

Not trying to scare you.  Just want to make sure you don't burn up you Dad's old saw.  If you're just making a few cuts every now and then you should be fine so long as you pay attention to the tune.
