I can see the bandsaw in the back ground .He must have mounted the log on the center axles and 8 side cut it . Rather peculiar to say the least .

I did octagonal cants for contest like Minden about 15 years ago before I made my first log turner , you can cut a bigger octagonal cant than a square cant out of the same log and it is alot closer to a round log

A guy here in new England makes them for us and others to use for disc stacking at our shows as a fun event. He cuts them 6in. He has a jig for his wood miser. We use only white pine.

I sometimes make up octagonal blocks for racing.
Round dressed blocks are the best choice but octagonal milled long then brought into the arena and docked on site are easier to move about. I do them on my mahoe portable mill.
