NOS Solo 681s
« on: March 22, 2014, 10:06:20 am »
Still am getting the bug from a customer on a Solo 681, tried to talk him out of it but he will not hear of it! However he has thrown a new twist into it. He has a new OEM late model Dolmar 7900 top end that he purchased and wants that top end put on a NOS 681.

Think they are really the same saw the main difference being the stroked crank. So, I cannot see a reason to do the new top end unless I am missing some difference in the porting. Looked at the kit he brought in and it is CP with a slab side piston, so is definitely a later model set up. Having never seen the inside of a 681, I am not sure of why he would want to do this, any thoughts?

I've put the 681 so far out of my mind I am forgetting info.  Thinking you had to run a much thicker base gasket to use a 7900 topend on the 681.

I knew we had been down this road before with a 665 solo.

Dan said yes on the 7900 cyl. on the 665-681.  Use the 1.5mm cyl. gasket.

There is no advantage in using 7900 PC on 681 except the new lighter piston.  If I had it to do over I would buy the 681 PC from Solo.  There was about $50 diff.  Baileys had 7900 PC for IIRC$170 free ship.  Solo was about $230+ship.  I would like to know what he thinks he is gaining.  IF you do change it for him I'd be interested in the 681 PC you take off  ;D.

Yep go OEM 681 IMO.  Unless you were doing a cheap rebuild and had a 7900 p+c already laying around.

My gut feel for the whole thing is that he has read or been told or fed some sort of nonsense about making the saw into some sort of killer race saw just by making the change over.

I would think he's better off sticking to the original cylinder if he wants the most power out of that setup.

I have no idea what is going on he constantly refers to 'my buddy that builds race saws' however he has never mentioned a name and 'his buddy' has steered him wrong a couple of times IIRC.

I agree with Gatekeeper, he would be better off with the stock setup. He has been coming around every spring for the last 2-3 years with the same idea. Most times I just tell him whatever you think you want, just bring me the NOS saw and the necessary parts and you will have what you want and my labor will be $100.

He goes away until the next spring!

He is a pro tree guy so who knows!

Tell him I'll buy the 681 for $300 and he will leave you alone...

I had to modify the top muffler support bolt hole to use the Solo muffler on the 7900 cyl.  7900 muffler bolts right up.  Still need to get a tank/handle for mine after SIL dropped tree on it.  1/2 tank fuel thru it.
Where to get a new handle, Solo?
