Sthil 056 Ignition Module
« on: July 28, 2013, 08:58:24 pm »
Hi all, new to the forum, hope to be able to help others at times when able to.  Seeing that I do a bit of electrical work, a mate has lodged this oldie on me. It has no spark, but the coil has tested all good. I am leaning toward either the magneto section or the ignition block itself. Down here in Aus, they are no longer available, new or second hand. Too good of a machine to just discard because of this, and maybe someone has a bit more knowledge on this model than we do. Is there a mod than can be done, or a replacement that we dont know about. Hope someone out there can help save this quality unit from the scrap heap. Many thanks. Geoff

I looked it up on a service manual that I have on micro fitche .According to that this praticular model uses an internal to the flywheel solid state capacitive discharge ignition systm which is mounted on an aluminum rotor plate .

There should be a mark on this stater plate which aligns with a mark on the pocket it sits in to set it for 27 or so degrees advance .That would be when the piston is approx. 16 thou before top dead center or for the metrically inclined 2.5 to 2.7 mm.I would speculate that if the timing is out too far you would not get any spark.

Thanks for that, but the saw was running well, then just died, so I would be thinking more towards an electronic failure, rather than the plate moving. Regards. Geoff

There is a work around off one of the chop saws.   Check the stihl ts-350/360 but I believe you will also need the flywheel.  If your saw has the Bosch ignition then your going to have to switch over to the SEM or search for a donor saw on ebay.

The other thing Im thinking is if your 056 has a points ignition then you should be able to replace the points and condenser with a nova or atom trigger.

Stihl should support some of these older models better than they do.
