stihl 036 runs wide open
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:11:41 am »
I have a stihl 036 Pro that runs wide open.  Cannot adjust it to throttle down.  Replaced the carb. but did not help.
Am told that may be leak in boot behind carb. or leak in the crankcase seal.  Anyone know where I can get service manual.  Having trouble getting to these parts.

Check PM for stihl 036 034 service manual.  72pages long so might take a second to download.

Sounds like a torn boot to me .Don't run it until you sort it out .

A person would not think the low speed jet can suck in enough air to run wide open but believe me they can with a big hole in the boot .

I've never experianced a torn boot on that model but the 038s' were famous for it . I mean unbelievable RPMs' ,sounded like a model airplane engine on steriods .

Funny thing is they would cut with a torn boot too .like crazy .Problem is they no doubt could not last very long .The only way to shut them down was to hit the brake or else they'd idle at probabaley over 8-9000 rpms just screaming .

You have to take off the side cover and below it you will find a plastic plug, pry the plug with flat head and behind it is a torx screw. you can get away just by popping the rear one but might help to take the front out as well. once its apart you can get to the rubber part and it collapses and pushes through the tank piece ater you take that brass ring out.

if the boot is torn, the anti-vibe mounts probably need to be replaced right along with it. might as well pull the rear handle right off and do it right. just replacing the boot without taking care of the mounts will result in another torn boot.

Thanks for the comments but I took the boot out and it's ok.  Could it be a crank case seal?  Or any thing else.

What do you do mean wide open. Do you mean its running full throttle without the carb flap being wide open. If that is the case there is a leak somewhere in the crank or in one of its components..   please describe your problem better and what you've done so far.  are you sure the carb isn't jammed open or something simple. do you have the other hose on below the boot
