stihl 290 310 390 029 039
« on: June 30, 2011, 04:02:10 pm »
Just got a stihl 390 and 025 in to work on. Both might be getting a 30 min caveman  muffler mod that sure beats the heck out of paying a $100 to a ebay seller.  :o

I am going to test how they came in. Then after carb adjustments and tune if needed and then test again after muffler mod  on the ms390.  Going to see if a 025 would need any muffler opening or not.

The 390 the guy says is a PITA to start and by 3rd pull rips the handle out of his hand on kick back. :D  What is your take on that? I have ideas.

Oh and he said not to sharpen the chains that he does that himself. So when I get time next week I sure up it cuts to start off. Looks to have a 24" 25" stihl bar on it under the scabbard.

So what percentage do you think the 390 will gain in 1 cut time with same chain after muffler mod and carb adjustments?  Compared to just carb adjustment and no muffler mod.
Not going to go by the way I will test when it just came in. Might run iffy who knows right now.

If his chain wont cut for chit I will put my  chain on for testing.

I know what I got out of a MS290 with muffler mod and carb adjustments. I was really surprised by that one.

A cheap no cost muffler modification that takes 30 minutes with a drill, dremel and  grinder. I only use all 3 because I have them on hand.  I call them caveman muffler mods.

The non adjustable carb. I think it runs on the lean side now so i dont even want to take the spark screen out yet. That little bugger does impress me with the power it has. An adjustable carb will make it a keeper.  ;)

The 039's really were not bad saws ,enough power .However it nor the 029 could hold up to professional use such as a tree service company  .Then again those boys aren't real gentle with them .Actualy they beat them to death truth be known .

I'd imagine though that a little work on the muffler would wake them up a tad .

I peeked at it this morning very quickly. The 025 has H and L on cover with 2 holes going back to  carb. Cant tell if one is blocked off or not.

If it doesn't have one the fully adjustable carb is a WT215, about 35$ brand new.

MOS you see above and it seems to be on others too.

You can get a Walbro WT-215 carb from a 021/023/025 or MS210/250/230 and swap the throttle shaft and choke shaft from your carb into it and You'll have a fully adjustable Walbro carb. This setup is much better than the Zama junk on the 200t's IMO. The WT-215's can be had cheap if You watch ebay for 'em.
