Stihl MS460/461 with 365/372 con rod.
« on: August 03, 2015, 01:41:24 pm »
A foreign Stihl dealer friend of mine is on an experiment.  He's  getting alot of customers coming in with blown lower con rod bearing failures on MS460/461s.
He and his machine shop friend are rebuilding the cranks with Chinese 365/372 roller bearings . Now he wants to try using the Husqvarna's connecting rods in the Stihls too, only trouble their 3mm longer.
He's  making up a aluminium spacer plate sandwiched between 2 cylinder gaskets.

Now I have no experience stroking saws, so my question is do any of you guys think this would work?

Is the 460 crank 3 piece design?  Maybe a nightmare if it's two piece. I would be inclined to put known high quality needle cages in after going to that much trouble.

440 crank is two piece, 460 is three.  The Stihl cranks are pressed together very tightly which make truing them tricky. Traditionally, you would press them back together with a fixture to get the crank timing very close, them true between centers using a brass hammer. Not sure how this would be cost effective with time plus parts?

Isn't the stroke determined by the crank?
If the rod is 3 mm longer then the piston goes up into the cylinder 3 mm further but then it goes down into the crankcase 3 mm less.   Will this not affect crankcase pressure?

Joe was saying Stihl 460/461 crank assemblies in his area are going for $250.
He claims he found a supplier selling Chinese 365/372 crank assemblies for $20 each. He's using the roller bearings and pins to rebuild the Stihl cranks. He's experimenting to use the Husky rods too.

Ande is correct , you are not changing the stroke on the saw by putting a longer rod on it , its the same stroke

Thanks Ed , I was kind of thinking the same thing.
Do you think raising the cylinder 3mm would make the longer rod work in the 460/461?

What about crankcase pressure.  Do you think it would be less.   It sure would seem that way to me.   The crank case would have a larger volume if it is being compressed 3mm less.
