im curious how you cleaned the cover?  any thoughts on chemically cleaning with chromic acid or other to minimize the weld contamination?

I sand blast the pieces before welding.   It will get into and cracks or breaks.
I have never tried to chemically clean a piece.   The sand blasting works pretty good and contamination problems have been minimal.
