Chain Questions
« on: May 10, 2014, 02:07:36 pm »
Where do Carlton, Oregon, Silver Streak and WoodlandPro rank with eachother? I read in an old post that Blount or Arien are the parent company for Oregon and they own Carlton so I'm just curious how many manufacturers there are and which ones are relabeled. Thanks.

Of those brands, I like the Oregon LGX and CL types the best. I have some Carlton and Woodland Pro that I use but normally don't buy it outright.

Never heard a good word about Chinese Silver Streak so far?

So I wonder if WoodlandPro and Carlton aren't made by Oregon? Is there SS from different countries? All I've read of it was in a year old post that said it's a soft homeowners chain.

Silver Streak is distributed by Stens.

IIRC Woodland Pro is much like Carlton. Carlton is a little different from Oregon though they are both Blount.

Oregon, Carlton, Windsor, and Sandvik are owned by Blount. I don't know who makes WoodlandPro. Silver Streak is now Oregon Outdoor Product which is the lawn and garden parts division, they do not offer chain in the catalog. It is possible somebody else is flogging cheap off shore chain under that name.

When you say WPro is much like Carlton, which is much like Oregon, do you mean differences in chain design or durability of edge? Given chain design being equal. Thanks

The Carlton chain does not look like Oregon and neither does Woodland Pro.

It has been said that Carlton and Woodland Pro use the Oregon LGX cutter but the the rest of the chain doesn't look like Oregon 3/8" LGX.

Carlton may be using the same cutters now but they weren't up to a year or so ago. They had very hard chrome like stihl chain. Oregon is much softer and easier to sharpen.

I'd like to try some of each but Bailey's says their Carlton stock has become very hit and miss. Stens shows it on their site. I'll buy only a loop wherever I get the best price but I noticed Stens Carlton reels are almost twice the cost of Oregon reels at Baileys ??? WTH? Who are some other sources some of you have found good prices on Carlton and Oregon chain? Thanks all.
