Homemade woodruff key

Any suggestions on materials and methods ? 

Its fairly thin and the ones I have are too thick, obviously this is the reason it broke.

I guess wood is out but maybe a washer cut and filed down or can I get away with a wood key.

I just get them at the hardware store.

They are generally soft steel in the chainsaws.

I bought a bunch at TSC to get close to one on a 3 wheeler once then used grinder to make it fit.

Maybe use a flat soft metal washer to make your own.

If you can't find one which you should be able to the easiest way is to use a piece of round steel stock the same radius as the key .Make sure you use the correct size because too thin you take a chance of ripping out the keyway in the crankshaft .

I did find one in a last ditch effort. I had a dead power mac 320 which had the same size. I guess now I have to make one for the 320 when I go to repair it.

I could have bought one I'm sure but saturday night and -20c , better just to stay home and make one.

You can get by without a key. locate the flywheel with the keyways aligned and tighten it down.

The taper is supposed to hold the flywheel. The key is only for proper alignment at installation of the flywheel.

Many of the racing chainsaws where they have swapped coils have the flywheel located in a different position where the keyways do not align.
