346 OE Piston
« on: February 26, 2011, 08:48:17 pm »
When did the 45cc 346 switch to a 2 ring piston? Last one I got was made in Germany with 2 rings. Is Stihl making pistons for Husky now?

I've never seen a 346 with 2 piston rings; either OE or NE. Could it be an aftermarket piston in there?

You just never know what's been done to a saw before you get it. I had a 670 that ran so-so. Just never had much snort to it. Would get toasted by my 630. Rebuilt the carb; no better. Decided to tear it down and have a look. Someone had been in there before and put an aftermarket open port style, non-windowed piston in it. Replaced it with a proper OEM windowed piston and it's a night and day difference.

Ordered the piston from Husky dealer. Came in a Husqvarna Group box. Has Mahle stamped inside the piston. Husky symbol stamped in the piston also. Other marks in piston are; 138, 42151, and 8K1. Part # on the box is 544 09 30-02. Other than 2 rings it is identical to the 1 ring pistons I have here.

Well the mystery piston is becoming less of a mystery. It seems that 3 counts of major stupidity are involved.

1. Husky Canada for giving a dealership to a hardware store.
2. The hardware store for putting the saws in the plumbing dept.
3. Me for thinking I could get parts from them.

The piston is from a bushsaw or trimmer.

The piston is the 2009 upate for the 343 series of trimmers. 42mm, may or may not work in a 346. Measures up good, my only concern would be the lower ring and intake port.

The hardware store screwed up and should take it back and get you the right piston.
