Chaps Repair
« on: July 22, 2017, 11:03:34 pm »
Chaps are a basic piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) for chains saw users.  Some people are reluctant to buy them, possibly due to the cost.  Some people are reluctant to 'retire' them, again, possibly due to the cost.  If only the outer fabric of the chaps is damaged, with none of the inner, protective fibers affected, the chaps can usually be repaired - a cost effective alternative.

Here is a common sense approach from the US Forest Service:
"Inspecting, Cleaning, Repairing, and Retiring USDA Forest Service Chain Saw Chaps"

*It should be noted that not all chaps are the same: some brands and models use different types of protective fibers, which meet acceptable performance standards.

Some brands and models of chaps ARE machine washable; so follow the manufacturers' recommendations on cleaning, detergents, etc.

The general instructions for repairing the outer layer, without sewing through or gluing the inner, protective fibers, should apply to most saw protective chaps.
