Nice work on those mufflers! With stock mufflers (even modded) I can see the screen not changing much. The discharge port is almost always much bigger then the baffle port. Now if you were to make a muffler in witch the reflection pulse was done without the baffle, but rather on the outer can of the muffler, I could see a screen being harmful to output. My educated guess is that it would have a less then good effect on the reflected pulse and require more restriction of the discharge port. Just a guess...

All chainsaws used on National Forests must
have an approved spark arrester (a stainless
steel wire screen in the muffler). The openings
in the screen must be .023 inches or less.
Forest officials may request a check of saws in
firewood cutting areas. Forest Service employees
are not allowed to take your saw apart so you
need to carry the tools needed to remove the
exhaust device and expose the spark arrester.
Certification is good for one year

I cut in national forest every year all the time. Last year I felled around 33 trees in nation forest. Like you said better make sure those spark arresters are correct. Good info there.

I was researching it for a guy wanting to do screen on a tube or pipe out the saws. I seen yours inside on yours and other guys showed me their on outer pipes.

I then looked up his area for cutting Oregon. They are even stricter then the USDA ones above. Almost to point need to be a stock saw. Says no mods to saws whatsoever.

If the screen is kept free of carbon build up, then there is nothing to gain performance wise by removing it. However they are prone to carbon clogging particularly if someone is using a low quality mineral based oil and/or a slightly richer mix ratio. Always worth removing every now and then to clean them out

Yes, I do like keeping the spark arrestors in the stock position if possible and really just open up the ports and baffles.
