I was thinking about this. Build of 440 372.

I like the way the 372 is built compared to the 440 JMO.   So many things the 372 did that was ahead of the 440. Thats not even counting the 372 has quad transfers etc. 

Working on the stihl is real similar to working on the 90's early 2000 poulans 330 3750 etc IMO. Easy to work on.

Don't forget the 440 is basically same design as the 044 which came out way back in 1988, the 372 around 1996. 8 years is a big leap in technology, at the time the 044 was the "competition " for the 268XP.
But Stihl did it right at the start with the 044 design and how many happy 044/440 owners are out there? The 441 certainly didn't gain as much fan fare.

But when did the 371 come out, 372 came from that right? Just like 044 to 440.

Info I dug up.  Right or wrong? Late 80's seems a little early for 371. Just thinking off the top of my head I would think 80's 272.

No the 371 didn't come to be in the late '80s, it came out around 1994 then a few years later [my 1996 info may be a little early] the 371 became the 372 with a beefier crankcase and bottom end.
The 272XP [big bore 268XP] came out around 1991. I was a Stihl only man for 28 yrs so my Husky dates may be off a year or so.

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet. Someone like you or I wrote that! Sounds like a woman yelled into the other room for her husband to tell her when the 372 came out.

Looking at IPL's . . .

Before the 372 there was the 272 which was a very fine - but different - series of chainsaw not related to the 372.

From the 268 came the 272XP in September 1991.

The 371XP came out in December 1995

The 365 came out in September 1996 - This was the open port version with the bolt on retainer plate for the intake boot and was added as a price point alternative.

The 362 came about in August 1998 as a fuel efficient alternative.

The 372XP was a minor upgrade of the 371XP that came out in November 1999 that went on for 10 years.

Jim this 440 will have a DP muffler on it when I get it done. So it will have that advantage over your 372 stock muffler and my 445. But I want to compare them in the ash with 20".

Bring the 372 you got from me that ran real good on 1st tank after rebuild that day comparing to the dolmar 7900 of yours.

I'll let you know when I am done with 440.  Waiting on parts.
