The shape of the file never kept me from getting angles wanted for a race chain. The triangle will work a little easier on .325" or 3/8" LP chain.

I've used the triangle to resharpen existing square chains. Seemed to work well for me.

Before I got my grinder I took a Stihl triangle file and converted a 3/8ths round chisel to square and ground one of the sides off the file and converted a .325 round ground chisel to square.   Both were for 20" bars.   I can also tell you that a lot of those angles were either high or low.   It was very time consuming and the results were just ok.   So hence the square grinder.  I love the grinder because I can hit the corner everytime.

from memory all the top timbersport champions including 7 time world champion Ron Hartill they all used triangle files. The compact design gives you the best angles where the flat chisel bit file is way too cumbersome with clearance restrictions.

For some of you who have the "rocking-chair" motion problem while filing with the chisel bit file, I found a golf ball for a file handle kept my filing stroke level.
Give it a try ;)

Did you drill a hole in the golf ball first and then press the handle of the file in?

Those old golf balls were sort of dangerous to play around with. I had one POP into my face once. That was 60 yrs ago. They may be different now?

It was in the vice jaws and somewhat exploded and shot some white liquid in my face. The carcass of the ball stayed in the jaws.

Really I never considered that from a golf ball.

Before I used a golf ball I had a nice Granberg wooden ball file handle with a threaded hole metal insert. File tang screws into the handle tight, I bought that thing back in the earlier 1970s and lost it about 5 years later, haven't seen them on the market since. If I remember correctly they were called Kwik-Knob.
