This was my first and only attempt at square filing, I filed this awhile ago. It seems to cut good but from looking at other photos on here its looks like I have a lot more practice to go. Sorry for the quality of the pics this is the best I could get from about 50 pics lol

Ok now if you could tell me what I am doing right & wrong. Or if I should never pick up a file again. I take criticism well lol

I am not an expert but it looks to me like you have it right in the corner of the tooth which is what you want.  So looks good to me.

Those look good. Now put it in wood and then a round filed chain to see the difference.

it may have ,on a work chain you will not notice that small defect ,I usualy do about 3-4 short swipes and run it ,if my teeth start getting different shapes ,the silvey straitens them out ,another tip for beginners file outside in ,and don't worry about nicking the straps ,I get good angles hitting the straps ,and have not broke a chain yet

Here is how I hold my file ,and it works good for me ,I grind about 90% of my chains ,but will file once in a while just because ,I normally hold the chain with my left hand ,this file was pretty dull and not doing much ,but gives a general idea how to hold the file when sharpening

If you are going to err on getting the corner of the file aligned with the outside corner of the cutter? Make towards low rather than high.

One a little low cuts OK until the beak breaks off.

A cutter filed a little high just never cuts good.
