Recommend a bar/chain for my Echo cs-6700
« on: June 23, 2015, 12:41:37 pm »
Hey all, this is such a great site! First post but I look forward to spending time in this community as i get into fixing up old saws.

I have recently inherited an Echo cs-6700 in really good shape, it runs pretty darn good but cuts like pig. Upon further inspection the chain is totally shot, as it has been filed poorly many, many times. Looking closer I noticed the bar and chain on this saw is not stock, its an 18" oregon H009 mount, 3/8" 0.058". I think this saw originally came with 3/8" 0.05". I'd like to put the right bar mount back on as this one is pretty sloppy. Can you folks give me some input? What size would be appropriate for this guy? It looks like in the manual it came with a 16", yet I've seen some with 24"? I'll mostly be using it as a firewood saw (95% poplar). Input on chain would be great. I'm thinking of finding some semi-chisel for this saw.

I talked to a local saw shop and they didn't have anything in D176 mount, and said it would be a special order item, $150 + which is crazy. Any good online sources for parts? Bonus points if it's in Canada, as our dollar is so terrible right against the greenback.

Welcome aboard. This a good place for a saw gear head. That price is not out of line for an Oregon Power match bar, chain and shipping here in the great white north. As you point out we are getting hammered by the low dollar. The 208SLHD176 20" laminated bar would be a good choice and somewhat cheaper. You can try SmallEngines.ca

I would say the 67cc would be real happy with up to a 20" in hardwoods. Maybe even 24" with a full skip chain IF cutting softwood.

D176 mount.  3/8 050 or 058 depending on what is popular for your area. I like 050.

Check out for bars and chains from this member in Ohio http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/used-chainsaw-parts-online/performance-outdoor-equipment-dolmar-parts/

I bought Laser laminated d176 20" bars from Cutters Choice website.

I put a 24" on this one for pic I bought from member Jon.

read on the 6700 http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/echo/echo-670/

might be something in there on the simple muffler mod I did under the oem deflector. Need to retune carb afterwords.

Thanks guys, that helps a lot!

Is that laminated bar you recommended the same as the Oregon Pro-Lite ones? One of the part numbers they gave me looks very similar but was called pro-lite (oregon part no. 180SLHD176). IT was a few bucks cheaper than the Pro-match. Is laser generally a re-brand of Oregon stuff?

Thanks for the link to barrettes small engine website, found a ton of good stuff on there, and IN CANDADA!  :o

I might have talked my local dealer down to $95 on an 18" promatch for this saw (180RNDD176), I'm not sure I can beat that price.

Any chain suggestions? All the shops around here like to push their no-name bulk chain they make themselves saying it outperforms brand name chain at half the cost etc. etc. Would like to stay away from safety chain like the vanguard if possible.

The first two digits are the length, the third indicates the gauge. Your saw will easily handle the 20" which is the longest available in laminated (Prolite). Go with the length you are comfortable with.
I am not a fan of Laser bars and chain, the quality seems inconsistent. Pay a bit more for Stihl or Oregon, you won't regret it.

Try looking around on customchainsawparts.  There is a good selection of fairly priced bars.

Thanks for the links everyone. I was able to leverage my local store down to a reasonable price on an 18" powermatch bar. This way I don't have to deal with shipping or exchange rate. Now just need to settle on chain. I'd like to stay away from the safety chains, and a lot of the firewood I cut is dirty dead-fall so I'm thinking semi-chisel is my best bet. I found a nice semi-chisel by oregon (DPX) so I think I will order that to try. My Stihl dealer tells me they won't sell any chain other than the green stuff, so much for trying out Stihl RM. Do I have to order the chain based on the exact drive link count specified by the bar (in this case 66)?
