440 timing issue

440 Husky. Father-in-law got it near new second hand. Always a real bear to start. Hard to pull over. Not on the weak side for arm strength for sure. Never ran nice.
Got running, tuned up nice enough while running. Still hard to start. Thoroughly cleaned, adjusted coil, etc. Same.  Coil appeared weak and not sparking up to snuff. New plug, same.
Installed new coil. Now it seems to backfire during pull start & stopping motion dead. Hard on the arm for sure, esp when the cord gets jerked back from your hand.
Managed to start it a few times, but it "spits" while running as if it is definitely a few degrees to far advanced. Popped off flywheel, key and keyway unnblemished, and fit
together nicely. Triple checked coil gap. Same. Tried opening the coil gap a few thousands, Same.
Any Ideas, short of grinding off the key & retarding it bubba style??

Sure does sound like it is to far advanced.    So CCW is the direction of the flywheel.   If you move the flywheel CCW you will advance it more.
But if you move the coil CCW you will retard the timing.   So you can move the flywheel or you can move the coil.   
If you decide to move the flywheel by modifying the keyway it only takes a very small amount.   I have taken a penny or a nickel and cut off a small piece which is usually smaller than the key used.  This will allow enough slop to either advance or retard the timing. 

You will not know by how many degrees you are moving it with out a degree wheel set up.   But I am guessing 5 to 6 degrees of retard in the timing  is what you need.   At least the penny or nickel trick can get you in the ball park. 

If the key is molded into the flywheel then you have no choice but to grind it down.   I would start with no more than half way to start with.

 3000 FPS, 5 to 6 degrees sounds exactly right, & key is molded into flywheel. Moving coil looks to be more involved. Hate to "bubba" it, but was kinda wondering if someone
else had to go this route. This saw, and 2 larger ones really show how poorly designed/make Huskys have become compared to equivalent Stihls.
Thanks for the reply btw.  I'll let it sit for now but may go at it in a week or two. I also may swap another coil in to be absolutely sure it isn't a coil issue.

Was it a aftermarket coil? 

Seen this yesterday and had some 440 info for ya. Hope you didnt buy aftermarket.
