Chainsaw Repair

I have seen people claim in the past that you can simply replace the electronic half of the Bosch module with a cheap $20 aftermarket module and they work,but I wonder for how long? We tried that in our shop in the mid 80's,my buddy hacksawed the electronic half off a dead one and installed a $7 Atom module,and it had spark and ran. We figured we were geniuses,we just fixed a $200 ignition with a $7 part.
So we fixed a few worksaws that way,but our glee did not last for long,they all failed soon and we had some pretty angry guys in our shop!It seems like the Bosch igntions have magnets all the way around the flywheel,unlike most which just have magnets on one spot on the flywheel,and this kills the little units quickly. Maybe some of the new units survive now,but I would not try that path again on someone else's saw.
