Author Topic: Husqvarna 440 Oil Leak while sitting (Read 6346 times)

I am 'attempting' to repair a Husky 440 for a friend. He must have had an "accident" with the saw since the grab bar was broken. That was easily replaced but the main problem is the oil leak. At first I thought the leak was caused by the bar oil injection hole was plugged with sawdust. After cleaning this out I noticed the chain guard plate had a slit in the aluminum. I removed the sprocket and plate cleaned the area and replaced with a new plate.
I filled the oil tank and left the saw sit overnight. In the morning there was oil on the bench coming from the pull started side. I removed the pull starter and the entire area was covered with oil.
Now to the question, where is the oil coming from? Could there be a crack in the case? I noticed there was a tube that fed the oil pump. Is there a seal from the oil tank holding this tube in place?
In any case, how do you take this apart to inspect the how the oil flows from the tank to the bar and where the leak could start?

I split the gas tank from the case and cleaned the inside. I appears the oil leak is at the junction of the oil tank and the case. The next question is how to remove the oil tank and check the gasket? What holds the two assemblies together?

1. If like this one see the oil tank vent on that side too. See if missing or leaking

2. I'd be looking for crack in case. I have plastic poulan here that leaks like that from crack.

Might not be as bad as this one or as easy to find. But I'd be looking around.

Well I tried the RTV at the junction of the tank and case and it did not stop the leak. I informed the owner and he said to go ahead and purchase a new crankcase. I ordered the 544932503 from mowpart.com and then looked at the above URL link. It shows the crankcase part number as 544932507. Now I am confused, which one is correct? The 507 part is less expensive than the 503, is the 507 without all the "extra" parts?
Husky does not have chat hours on Saturday and mowpart.com is also closed so I can not call them to cancel/change the order.

Further investigation revealed the 507 part is the correct one for this age saw. Now I have to go through the cancel/re-order process. Unfortunately, the supplier is closed this weekend so I'll have to wait till Monday to confirm the change in order.

Thank you 'cut4fun' for the link to purchase the correct part.
Now to the next question, while dis-assembling the case, I removed the oil pump from the rubber distribution tube. I noticed the outer portion of the metal tube, the part that insert's into the rubber tube, has a small hole. I suspect it is the inlet for oil to the pump shaft.
Which direction does this hole face when inserting into the rubber? The hole facing the case or away from the case. I would have thought there would be a hole on each side of this metal tube but I only see one.

Also I have difficulty removing the screws holding the motor to the plastic crank case. I got two out but the remaining two are stuck. I do not see any remnants of Locktite on the two removed screws. Are they inserted with an impact?

I should look closer before writing. On closer inspection I see the hole on the end of the oil pump is a through hole. That makes more sense since the internal shaft would pick up oil on one side and push it out the other through the rubber hose.
I am going to look into a 4 mm hex impact socket to try and remove the two remaining screws.

Sorry to be a bother, I jury rigged an extension and socket set with a 4mm hex, fired up my compressor and removed the two remaining screws holding the engine to the plastic case. It moves a little but what is the trick to get the engine out of the case. Do you have to remove the carb and associated linkages? Also the crankshaft looks like it is pressed into the plastic case, does that have to be pressed out or should I just cut the case since I am replacing it anyway?
This is getting more involved than I originally anticipated.

I have not worked on a Husky 440 but have taken the 455 Rancher completely apart and if the 440 is built in a similar way then the bottom half of the metal crankcase is set into the plastic and cannot be removed. When you order another one is should come that way.

Looking at the pictures of the replacement case, it does not appear to have any items associated with the engine. I'll wait to see what arrives to determine my next move.
In hindsight, this was a job I should have refused. Between Sears Parts Direct not having the parts in stock when their web site showed "In Stock" with a 2 week delivery and then trying to get a refund. Then selecting the older version of the case and waiting to get a reply from this new supplier for the new part.
Additionally having to use an impact to remove the hardware with the engine still help firmly in the case, I have spent more time than it will be worth it.
At least the good folks on this forum have been very helpful.
