I just got a whole pile of Meteor pistons in for all manner of saw, no matter the brand. After checking them ALL out, I find that they all have the 'two ear' clips! There is much discussion/confusion on the quality of 'two ear', 'long ear' and 'no ear' clips from reputable and gray market manufacturers. So, lets keep all this pin clip stuff in one place.

What are your thoughts, experiences? Post them here!

If you are going to run a no-ear circlip, the piston pin area needs to be set up for the no-ear by having a access groove leading to the circlip groove so you can remove the clip.

Look at piston pictures and you will figure out what I'm talking about.

I know exactly what your referring to 660Magnum.
One of the things I do when installing a clip is to make sure the gap is facing straight down or straight in line with the direction the piston travels and nearest the crankcase. Never had a failure.

thanks for the tip 3000.

what is the root cause of all these clip failures?

poor quality of clips? not enough clip tension? too wide of clearance of clip in groove? wrist pin ends not machined flat? one particular brand?

any ideas? have not seen this, just want to know what to look for.

Part of the problem with the double ear clips is people over compress them and plastically deform them when installing, then they don't have enough tension to stay in place. The material might also be inferior but if they have enough tension when installed, they'll stay in place.

The installer needs to check the fitment of the clips very well. The problem with clips that have an "ear" that sticks out is the "ear" portion catches a lot of heat and becomes quite hot. If the clip isn't tempered correctly or as Shaun mentions, of a poor quality material, then the "ear" portion breaks right off and ruins stuff. I keep a good assortment of new OEM Husky single-ear clips from 372 (12mm) and 385 (13mm) handy and if the groove is similar dimensions, I use those. I also keep new Stihl clips on hand, including those for 056 (13mm) that are thicker. The thing to remember about applications using double-ear clips is that a lot of those engines run at overall lower RPM than modern saws.

Ive used the oem 'ear' style circlips on other piston applications and not had any problems/failures. Like you said, gap up or gap down is how the clips are placed.

Problems with the Asian 'white box' kits happened because of poor quality control. Pins from one place, rings from another, clips from a third...all thrown together with a no name piston.

Just tore down 2-266 Husky's w/scored pistons both had OEM 2 ear clips. Clips were installed w/gap@3-4 oclock. I had been rode hard and put up wet the other real nice fairly low hr. for an 85 ym. I knew I had seen some OEM 2 ear clips somewhere. Must have been in a 66 I built a couple of years ago.

If OEM I use 2 eared if that is what came in the saw. If not oem, I stay away aftermarket 2 eared.

My 2nd echo 4500 has 2 eared OEM. Never opened the 1st one.

appreciate the know-how folks! glad i asked this.

experienced with tru-arc retainers. these wire locks are a total different ball of wax.

tru-arcs like 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock install. they seem to spin after tear down.

looking for alternatives, net search came up with these: http://krammloxusa.com/

thought they were interesting anyway.
