How do you buck large rounds.
« on: April 07, 2014, 10:14:37 pm »
I was just wondering how some of you buck up large logs.  I myself always cut from the top down and then switch sides and cut from the top down and put in a wedge to prevent pinching.  I then roll the log so I then cut what was the bottom from the top also.

Of course this depends on bar length and size of log.  Over the top and down to get the bottom far edge.  Or, I bore in from the top and leave a holding piece to keep from getting pinched.  Then come back over and cut the top piece once the bottom is cut.

Interesting idea, I have not heard of anyone using that technique before.

I was assuming in my endeavors that the log was larger across then the bar you had on hand.   That is why I mentioned the cutting from both sides.

I do the same Roger! Don't like messing with changing the bar for only a few cuts out of hundreds.

In my case the longest bar I have is 32" and a lot of the rounds I have cut were in excess of 40".

I used to quarter up large logs with 084 3120 for guys with 50cc saws and 20" bars.  Then they bucked up the quartered sections.

Depends .I normally walk over the top and down .You have to watch how the log lays so you don't pinch it .

Do you use wedges when doing big rounds Al?

I wish I could come across a log big enough to have to walk around it from the other side to finish the cut....but 50" or bigger is hard to find for me!

Depending on how the log is laying I go across the top and then bring it back to me to finish the cut. I have had to walk around one log even with a 42". It was a little over 60".
