Tree Winch

Well I got my tree winch together and took it to the mountains to try it out.     It is just a inexpensive harbor freight winch that I welded a mount for so that it can be strapped to a tree for pulling over leaners in the wrong direction and for skidding out after limbing.

Neat idea.

Guy I used to cut with used the big chain type hand com-along type  deal.  For the same uses as you are it seems.
Used to be able to pull dang trees whatever direction you wanted.  IMO it would have pulled them down till they broke without cutting.

Because I am cutting in National Forest you cannot be driving back in there without a road.    A lot of the dead trees are no longer next to a road so you need a way to get them out by the road to load in to my truck.   So if you can pull them over toward the road and then skid them out it is a big plus when it comes to wear and tear on your back.

Not a new idea that is for sure but it was not very expensive to get a winch from HF.   With a coupon it was 170.00 dollars and the battery I already had for a winch on my trailer.    The mount I used some scrap metal from past projects.    The mount is actually pretty simple and did not take much metal.    I did not want to make any more heavier then necessary.   The wagon really came in handy.

Just thinking of other ways too.

Allow dirt bikes or atv's?

When I lived in MT and camped in the national forest. I used to use my dirt bike to drag smaller trees back into camp. 
Imagine with todays atv's you could pull biggins.

Remember having to have shovel on dirt bike. Thinking something to do with exhaust intact too.

They do not allow ATV's or motor cycles off of marked dirt roads.    If you want to go in you have to do it by foot.

That would be something to see.   I did not grow up around big animals like that so I do not know a lot about them.

way more money but i think a capstan winch would be ideal for this.....pretty easy to get 200'+ of rope and its light.
